How to Use This Calculator
Using the Shingle Calculator is straightforward:

Quick Estimate tab: Enter your total roof area in square feet and select a waste factor. The calculator instantly shows how many bundles and squares of shingles you need, along with an estimated cost range.

Detailed Takeoff tab: Enter your roof's length and width, select the pitch, and choose your shingle type. The calculator computes the true roof area (adjusted for slope), then provides a complete material list including bundles, underlayment rolls, drip edge pieces, ridge cap, starter strip, and nails.

Budget Planner tab: Enter your roof area, shingle type, and state. The calculator estimates your total project cost broken down by materials, labor, tear-off, and disposal — customized for your state's pricing.

The Formula
The shingle calculation uses these formulas:

Roof Area = Length × Width × Pitch Multiplier For a 50 × 34 ft roof at 4/12 pitch: 50 × 34 × 1.054 = 1,792 sq ft

Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100 1,792 ÷ 100 = 17.92 squares

Bundles Needed = Squares × 3 × (1 + Waste%) 17.92 × 3 × 1.10 = 59.1 → 60 bundles

Underlayment Rolls = Roof Area ÷ Roll Coverage (typically 400 sq ft for 15lb felt) 1,792 ÷ 400 = 4.48 → 5 rolls

Drip Edge Pieces = Roof Perimeter ÷ 10 ft (standard piece length) (50 + 50 + 34 + 34) ÷ 10 = 16.8 → 17 pieces (plus waste)
Example Calculation
Example: Average Home in Texas

Sarah has a 1,700 sq ft ranch-style home in Austin, TX with a simple gable roof at 5/12 pitch.

Step 1: Calculate true roof area 1,700 sq ft × 1.083 (5/12 pitch multiplier) = 1,841 sq ft

Step 2: Calculate materials
• Squares: 1,841 ÷ 100 = 18.4 squares
• Bundles (with 10% waste): 18.4 × 3 × 1.10 = 60.7 → 61 bundles
• Underlayment: 1,841 ÷ 400 = 4.6 → 5 rolls of 15lb felt
• Drip edge: ~168 ft perimeter ÷ 10 = 17 pieces
• Ridge cap: 50 ft ridge ÷ 25 cap shingles per bundle = 2 bundles
• Starter strip: 100 ft eave × 2 sides = 3 rolls
• Nails: 18.4 squares × 320 nails = 5,888 nails (~2 boxes)

Step 3: Estimate cost
• Architectural shingles: 61 bundles × $35 = $2,135
• Underlayment + accessories: ~$450
Materials total: ~$2,585
• Labor (Texas average): 18.4 sq × $350 = $6,440
• Tear-off + disposal: ~$1,200
Total project estimate: $10,225

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?
You need 3 bundles of standard shingles per roofing square. A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof area. So for a 1,700 sq ft roof, you need 17 squares × 3 = 51 bundles, plus 10-15% extra for waste.
How many square feet does a bundle of shingles cover?
A standard bundle of asphalt shingles covers approximately 33.3 square feet. Three bundles cover one roofing square (100 sq ft). Some premium and architectural shingles may require 4-5 bundles per square — always check the manufacturer's specifications.
How much waste should I add to my shingle calculation?
Add 10% waste for a simple gable roof, 12-15% for a hip roof, and 15-20% for complex roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, or skylights. The waste accounts for cuts around vents, pipes, edges, and ridge caps.
How do I calculate roof area from house square footage?
Multiply your home's footprint (ground floor area) by the roof pitch multiplier. For example, a 1,500 sq ft footprint with a 4/12 pitch: 1,500 × 1.054 = 1,581 sq ft of roof area. Add eave overhangs (typically 1-2 ft on each side) for the true total.
What is the cheapest type of roofing shingle?
3-tab asphalt shingles are the most affordable at $70-100 per square (100 sq ft) for materials. Architectural shingles cost $100-150 per square but last 25-30 years vs 15-20 years for 3-tab, making them a better value per year of life.
